Former Boston mayor gives Memorial Day speech to MS/HS

Both the middle and high school gathered together on Friday, May 27, before the three day weekend including Memorial Day. The assembly was in the gym and included performances from the high school band, chorus, and Sound Waves. The Memorial Day address was a special appearance from the former mayor of Boston, Ray Flynn.

The card making club meets every few weeks to make cards for events. The club is run by eighth grade foreign language teacher Doris-Ann Vosseler. There are many available resources to make cards with during the club. This after school activity takes place five times a year.

Middle school activities involve a mixture of all middle school students and the teachers which causes teachers and students to become more familiar with each other. Teachers start activities depending on their personal preference and skills.

French students practice skills by creating storybooks

French teacher Julia Gross assigned her class to write storybooks in French. After each student was finished, he or she presented his or her story to the class. Students then gave feedback on how the story could be improved.

VIDEO: Manchester Essex Varsity Sailing team

The Manchester Essex Varsity Sailing team has had a strong season so far.  The team practices every day, except for Sunday, from three to seven which helps in their success.  The team is ferried to the boating dock where they rig up and head out into outer Manchester Harbor for practice. Thesailing teamuses the summer sailing 420 boats that belong to the Manchester Sailing Association. The MSA lets the sailing team borrow the boats for the spring season.

                The Manchester Essex Regional High School robotics team, FIRST Team 2084 RobotsByTheC, is building a robot to compete in the FIRST robotics competition, an international competition between schools across the world as far ranging as Brazil and Israel. FIRST, founded in 1989, is an organization founded Dean Kamen (the guy that invented the Segway) to inspire young people to join the fields of science and engineering. RobotsByTheC has spent every day of the past six weeks going though the design process to build a robot.

English students actively participate in studying ‘All Quiet on the Western Front’

English teacher Elizabeth Edgerton instructs her freshmen students how they will play the roles of four different soldiers from the book All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque. The students posted paper helmets on the bulletin board, or in this case the World War I trench, to represent their military company. To advance their company to the next trench or section of the board, the students must pass quizzes on chapters they read from their All Quiet on the Western Front books.

Drama Fest a success for Manchester Essex

On March 3th, 2011, Manchester-Essex hosted Dramafest in the auditorium. The competing plays consisted of “The Giver” from Salem, “White Blood” from Melrose, “The Complete History of America (Abridged)” from Manchester-Essex, “Shadowbox” from Wellesley, “Property Rights” from Gloucester, “American Land” from Malden, “Woman and Wallace” from Lynnfield, and “The Love of the Nightingale” from Peabody.

Manchester-Essex continued on to the next round.

Manchester and Essex battered by multiple storms

The Manchester Essex Regional School district has lost five days of instruction to snow this year. With storms hitting the area almost every week since the new year, both communities are feeling overwhelmed by the weather.

The last round of storms were on Wednesday February 2 and Thursday February 3.  Students were released half an hour early on Wednesday and school was cancelled on Thursday.

During last week’s twin storms, MEMO photojournalists documented the impact on both towns.
