Twin brother featured in art student’s work

Lila Hughes photo

Junior Sarah Lewiecki created her latest piece, inspired by her twin brother Ian Lewiecki, over the summer.

The acrylic painting is called “Brother.”

“The painting took me about a month, and I worked on it for an hour each day,” Lewiecki said.

According to Lewiecki, the current version of the painting is not the finished product, but she hopes to finish it by the end of the month. The impressionistic painting consists of different shades of purples and blues, giving off a mood of melancholy, Lewiecki said.

Lewiecki plans on modifying the background and parts of the face to make it look more realistic.

She said, her favorite part about the painting is the mouth, the nose, and the overall mood.

Last year, Lewiecki won a Gold Key in the Boston Globe Scholastic Art Awards for her self-portrait that was similar to this painting. Both paintings use the same technique, which includes circles that contain different shades of analogous colors. They are both portraits from the shoulders up, and are the same size in width and height.

“I’m a huge fan of the design aesthetic and the repetition of the shapes. They add a whole other dimension to the painting,” junior Zack Trembowicz said.

The two paintings having complimentary color schemes, and according to Lewiecki, this emphasizes the fact that though she and Ian are twins, they are two different people.

“Although she hasn’t finished yet, this painting might be stronger than her self portrait. Last year was focused more on color, and this focuses more on mood. It shows growth and maturity from Sarah as an artist,” art teacher Marion Powers said.

“I would say my style is semi-realistic but is also abstract,” Lewieck said.

She attended classes at Montserratt College of Art this summer, and she is taking the Art Portfolio class at the high school.

Although Lewiecki does not want to be a freelance artist, she said she would like a career where creativity would be required.

Boston Globe Scholastics Art Awards: Contest honors highest number of winners in school history

Out of the 567 Gold Key recipients in Massachusetts honored at the Boston Globe Scholastic Art Awards, four of these honors were awarded to students from Manchester-Essex, art teacher Marion Powers said.

By Melissa Moore

INDEPENDENT EDITOR

Out of the 567 Gold Key recipients in Massachusetts honored at the Boston Globe Scholastic Art Awards, four of these honors were awarded to students from Manchester-Essex, art teacher Marion Powers said.

Eighth-graders Ben Alger and Julia Whitten, junior Samantha Nieberle, and senior Rachel Jones received the awards.

According to Powers, Manchester-Essex did better than all other schools of its size in Massachusetts and better than many larger schools as well.  The school had the highest number of winners in its history.

In both the middle and high school, 13 entries were awarded a Silver Key and 14 received an Honorable Mention, Powers said.

“I’m very happy, very proud of our art students and our program,” Powers said.

Jones was awarded a Gold Key for her senior portfolio in photography, consisting of eight images and a statement.  According to art teacher Caroline Epp, this is the first time in a long time that a Manchester-Essex student has received a Gold Key for a photography portfolio.

“I’m very proud,” Epp said.  “I’m particularly happy for Rachel Jones.”

The Boston Globe Scholastic Art Awards judges select the recipients of these awards based on excellence in three criteria: originality, technical skill, and emergence of a personal vision, Powers said.  Despite Powers’ not liking “teaching to contests,” Manchester-Essex “had a strong showing,” she said.

The results of the competition show how dedicated Manchester-Essex art students are, Epp said.

“I am thankful for the support from the administration and community in supporting the art program,” she said.

“Our program will only become stronger,” Powers said.

The Gold Key and Silver Key artwork will be displayed in the State Transportation Building until April 7.

Rachel Jones wins Gold Key for Senior Photography Porfolio

Senior Rachel Jones submitted 8 images and a written artist statement to the Boston Globe Scholastic Art Awards this year, and ended up winning a Gold Key for her images. They will go next to the National Level for consideration for further awards.

The questions that she was required to answer for her artist statement were:

  1. Why did you select the work you submitted for your Art/Photography Portfolio?
  2. How do you hope people will react when they look at your work?
  3. What role does art play in your life?

Her response was the following:

“My inspiration for my portfolio came from the photo of the little girl looking through barn doors. After taking this photo I thought of how I could incorporate the idea of “looking through things.” This is important to me because as a teenager, I am constantly discovering new things about myself by trying new things and essentially looking through new doors and new opportunities. The message I am trying to portray is that teenagers, high school students especially, are always discovering themselves and that trying new things and stepping out of your own skin is what can help you discover who you are. I hope that this message comes across in my photos through the use of shallow depth of field to show a foggy background through an in focus object.

This foggy background represents what teenagers are hesitant to try, but is essentially what they want to discover about themselves. The clear, in focus, part of the photos represent what they know and what is comfortable, but they need and want to push through this wall to discover themselves. I hope that when teenagers see this portfolio it inspires them to break through whatever wall is in front of them and try the one thing they have wanted to do, but have never had the courage to do so. I hope this will help them discover themselves because they are the future. The world is full of people, but if those people don’t know who they are, then who does?

My work has also inspired me to try new things. I have always been a skier, but have always wanted to try to snowboard but I was afraid of failure. I recently tried it for the first time and although it can never replace skiing, I have no regrets of trying. It opened a new door to discover a little more about myself that I didn’t know existed. This is one of the roles that art plays in my life; it helps me discover who I am and inspires me to try new things.”
