Coin toss lab in 10th grade Biology simulates genetic probability and heredity

On Wednesday the 11th, Biology teacher Maria Burgess’s tenth grade biology class did a coin toss lab to try and simulate the probable heredity of certain genes.

Chillax Club collects donations for U.S. troops

Throughout the month of December, the Chillax Club asked for and collected donations. Library assistant Cathy Hunt organizes the group which encourages students to come to the meeting and meet new people. The club was collecting packages of socks, sweatshirts size L and XL, packages of t-shirts L and XL, and white twin size sheet sets for the hospitals. Half of the donations went to the American Legion in Manchester because from there, they were sent to Operation Troop Support. Operation Troop Support is an organization from Boston’s north shore area and will supply military hospitals with needed items and send care packages to deployed troops. Hunt drove the rest of the donations to a homeless shelter in Boston where the clothes were to be distributed to veterans.

Second annual senior citizens luncheon

On December 17, 2011the senior citizens of Manchester and Essex came to the Manchester Essex Regional High School for a turkey lunch. The High School band, chorus, and a cappella played for the citizens for about two hours. This is the second annual luncheon and more than 50 seniors attended.

9th grade world history class debates over nationalism

From December 13 to December 15, Jessica Tran’s E block World History class held a debate over the topic of nationalism.  Students were required to write a case on the affirmative or negative side with a partner, and they were expected to debate it against another group opposite of what they were.  Also, students needed to dress up in formal attire for the debate in order to get a good grade on their project.

Middle School students write for newspaper

On November 15, 2011 the middle school journalism had one of their meetings after school. Journalism is every Tuesday from 2:30 to 3:30. Seventh grade math teacher Keith Stefanek and eight grade English teacher Vidula Plante are in charge of the journalism club. The newspaper is called “The Sting” and comes out twice a year.

DECA Organizes the Annual Winter Semi Formal

The winter semi formal is an annual fundraiser for DECA.  Every year students get together to attend the winter wonderland themed dance.  The DJ of the night was DJ BJ, a local student from Salem State.

Annual Jingle Bell Walk puts a smile on kids’ faces

The annual Jingle bell walk was held last Saturday, the third, at Masconomo Park and the community center.  At the Jingle Bell Walk, Santa drives into Manchester Harbor on a fishing boat and disembarks at one of the docks at Masconomo Park.  Then Santa gets onto a trailer (later used for hay rides) and rides up to Singing Beach followed by the enthusiastic crowd.  Activities, music, and refreshments were offered at the community center shortly after the walk.

AP Physics class uses Newton’s Second Law to figure out a mystery mass

The C block AP Physics class, taught by Kyle Linehan, used special Vernier tracks and cars to measure the force of the cars slamming into the end of the track.  Using this and Newton’s second law (Force = Mass X Acceleration), they can determine the mass of a mystery object.

8th Grade Class learns why they should attend North Shore Technical High School

On Wednesday, October 19th, the MERMS 8th grade class gathered in the auditorium to listen to reasons why they should attend high school at North Shore Technical School.  Two students and a North Shore Tech freshman advisor informed the middle school about what can be expected.  Many students took interest, saying that this was a good way to spread the word.

9th grade physics class constructs velocity lab

On Friday November 4th, Deb Nolan’s B Block Physics First class had freshman students working with advanced equipment to learn about velocity.  The students worked together to release little cars down a track and find the time at certain points on the track.
