High school art teacher Marion Powers assigns a project to her art foundations class using recycled items. The students had to create a piece of clothing or accessory using non-traditional recycled materials.

NAHS members prepare artwork for NAHS induction ceremony

The National Art Honors Society prepared for the induction ceremony that was held during the high schools Winter Chorus and Band concert. Each NAHS member invitee was required to submit a piece of art to be admitted to the group. THe theme of the work was “The Artist Inside.”

Soundwaves perform at the HEART holiday concert

On Thursday, December 1st The Manchester Essex Regional high school’s a cappella group, The Soundwaves preformed at the Manchester Historical Society for the HEART holiday concert. The concert was hosted by members of HEART a foundation to support the gay, lesbian community.

Eighth grade foreign language classes perform skits

Students in the eighth grade foreign language classes took part in group projects. Eighth grade foreign language teacher Doris- Ann Vosseler had students write ads for the products they were to sell. It is a fun way to help the students learn new Spanish vocabulary and use the advertisement techniques they learned in English class with English teacher Vidula Plante. Some students filmed their skit at the school so they could play the video for the class. Students could also act out their skit in front of the class if they did not want to film it and put it on YouTube or on a disc. After working a long time on the skits, the other classmates enjoyed watching them.

Thanksgiving Day Victory for MERHS

The Thanksgiving football game was held at Georgetown High School on Thursday, November 23. 

Each year the two rivals, Manchester-Essex and Georgetown face each other at the traditional Thanksgiving Day game.  For this season, Manchester-Essex moved up to the Northeastern Conference/ Cape Ann League (Massachusetts Division four).  Collectively over the years that the two teams have competed, Manchester- Essex has had more wins, 27-24.

Being in the same division, each team has had their ups and downs this season. The close game was another victory for the Hornets as well as the last game for the seniors. None of the seniors plan to continue their football careers in college (fall 2012).

Field Hockey Defeats Swampscott in First Round of State Tournament

MERHS Varsity field hockey traveled to Swampscott for the first round of the state tournament. Manchester Essex and Swampscott were tied with a minute and thirty second left. Junior Megan Jones scored with a minute and five second left of the game. The Hornets captured the victory with 3 goals to 2.

The Chillax Club hosts their first fundraiser

On Wednesday November 2nd, the new and promising Chillax Club, ran by Cathy Hunt, had their first fundraiser of the year. Cathy Hunt’s purpose for creating the club is to help form friendships. The club tried something different by selling delicious ice cream from Down River Ice Cream in Essex.

Freshman Field Hockey takes the win from Danvers

On Thursday September 22nd, the Manchester Essex Freshman Field Hockey team traveled to Danvers High School.  After a long game, Manchester Essex pulled through and beat Danvers 3-1.

MERHS “Green Team” Garden Provides for School Lunch

Spanish Teacher Eric Magers is the advisor of the Green Team. He does many extracurricular activities with students after school, including harvesting the schools garden every Monday right after school. The Green Team garden provides fresh greens for school’s lunch salad bar in both the fall and spring.
