Drama department presents SCORE the Musical

Manchester Essex Regional High School’s drama club recently had great success in their past production The Complete History of America (Abridged). The school competed in the METG Drama Festival competition and later became one of three state champions. Because of this great success the club had only three weeks time to put on their spring musical. In place of a full show  the club preformed SCORE The Musical, a musical review co-directed by seniors Piper Brown and Maura Driscoll for their SCORE (Senior choice of related experience) project. The show included a variety of songs from popular musicals such as Hairspray, West Side Story, Hair, Annie, Newsies, Chicago and many more. The show ran at 7 PM on Friday, May 20th and Saturday May 21st.

Interactive technology games help teach math

Seventh grade math teacher Keith Stephanek has been organizing competitions in his classes to review math material. The students are given a worksheet and some time to complete it before the game starts. Once they are all done, Stephanek would project a powerpoint with the different answers. Students would then punch in their response on hand held interactive clickers, and then when Stephanek showed the answers, they could see whether or not they got points for their team.

The National Art Honor Scoiety worked with the MER Green Team to create signs for the school’s organic garden.  Green Team advisor Eric Magers obtained the signs from the fabricators that created the metal Lucidomatics that are used to sort recycling and compost during lunch. The signs are made from metal scraps and have posts welded to them.  The NAHS used metal primer and paints that they are hoping will withstand the elements. French teacher Julia Gross is teaching her French class a new verb tense by having each student look up an obscure sport and explain it to the class in that tense. Gross has been trying new ways to get her student involved and make class as productive and as fun as possible, and this is one of them. “The verb tense changes when talking about sports,” she said, which is why it is so helpful for students to explain their sports in the new verb tense.

The high school girls’ softball team went up against North Andover on May 6. This season has been different from the last due to the new home field, as well as new captains Corey Bradley, Rebecca Lynch, and Patty Wright. Sweeney Park’s little league baseball field used to serve as the varsity softball field, but a change was necessary;  although the team was comfortable with its old field, opponents often complained because of the grass and raised pitching mound, which is unlike a softball field with a flat, dirt mound. The team was very excited to hear of the new playing grounds and is happy with the results. They have had a couple home games and the next is scheduled for May 16 against Triton High School. They lost against north Andover 11-5.
